What is the germinative layer?

The germinative (or basal) layer is the deepest layer in the epidermis. 

It is made up of germinative cells (the so-called “mother cells”) endowed with the capacity to divide in order to ensure adequate epidermal renewal.

The remaining daughter cell, in turn, becomes a “mother cell”.
