What is a mother cell?

A mother cell is a cell in the germinative layer that has the capacity to divide into two daughter cells in order to ensure cellular renewal.

What happens is that one of the daughter cells (the keratinocyte) arising from this division process starts to migrate towards the skin surface, ultimately being shed from the superficial stratum corneum.
